On the job, you will ... 

  • Provide basic care to patients or residents, such as bathing, assisting, dressing, repositioning patients or assisting them in the restroom 
  • Measure patient vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature 
  • Serve meals and support feeding 
  • Record patient health concerns and report information to nursing or management staff 
  • Perform basic medical duties, including phlebotomy and conducting an EKG

Individuals with patient care technician credentials find full-time jobs providing basic care for patients in hospitals, physicians’ offices, nursing homes or extended care facilities. 

In addition, completion of the Patient Care Technician program is a pre-requisite for Job Corps’ Advanced Training Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program, which prepares students for additional health care career opportunities. 

 

The credentials you will earn ... 

In the Patient Care Technician training program, you will earn nationally recognized credentials and a state-issued credential/license. 

  • Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A) 

Students should also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of the program. 

What you’ll need to start training ... 

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent (can be earned at all Job Corps centers) 
  • Completion of all introductory and career preparation courses 
  • Passing scores on all written and performance tests 
  • Meet academic (math and reading) requirements 
  • Compliance with state requirements that may involve a criminal background check
